This year’s Women’s Day celebrations were far more than marking a date on the calendar. It was about action, connection, and the collective strength of community. Live Easy’s heart for service shone brightly as we embarked on a two-part journey to give back – first at the Frida Hartley Shelter on Thursday, 8 August, and soon in Pretoria on Friday 15 August.
Located in Johannesburg, the Frida Hartley Shelter has stood for decades as a safe haven for women and children who have faced homelessness, abuse, and hardship. Beyond providing accommodation, the shelter equips residents with training, counselling, and resources to help them rebuild their lives. It is a place of second chances — and sometimes, first real opportunities.
When our team arrived on the morning of 8 August, the energy was instantly uplifting. Warm greetings and bright smiles welcomed us inside. The shelter’s walls were alive with the sounds of laughter, children playing, and women chatting together — a stark but beautiful contrast to the difficult journeys many had faced before arriving there.
We were there to celebrate Women’s Day — but more importantly, to honour the women themselves. We didn’t just want to “drop off” donations; we wanted to spend time, listen, and truly connect.
One of the women we met was Khanyi, who gave us an in-depth view of life at the shelter. She spoke openly about the daily routines, the support systems in place, and the sense of sisterhood that has formed among the women. Listening to her, we gained a deeper understanding of how the shelter doesn’t just provide a roof over one’s head – it offers safety, stability, and a pathway to a better future. Stories like hers are the heartbeat of places like Frida Hartley – stories of resilience, faith, and transformation.
Women’s Day is often associated with celebration, flowers, and kind words — all beautiful in their own right. But this experience reminded us that the best way to honour women is through meaningful action. By stepping into spaces where needs are great and resources are few, we move from simply recognising women to actively empowering them.
For our team, the visit was a moment to reflect on the privilege we have – not only in our own lives but in our ability to contribute. It’s easy to underestimate how much even the smallest gesture can mean. A warm conversation. A bag of groceries. A pair of shoes. These things can seem ordinary to us, but in the right hands, they become life-changing.
And the journey doesn’t end there. On Thursday, 15 August, our team will be in Pretoria for another give-back initiative. Just as we did at Frida Hartley, we’ll be connecting with local women, listening to their stories, and sharing donations made possible by our incredible community of tenants.
The Pretoria initiative is part of a broader commitment – ensuring that our support extends beyond a single day, beyond a single location. We’re building relationships, not just moments. Our hope is that each visit plants a seed of encouragement, reminding women that they are not alone, that someone is in their corner.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the generosity of our loved tenants. Over the past few weeks, you’ve responded with open hearts – donating clothing, food, toiletries, and other essentials. Each item is more than just a material gift; it carries a message: “We see you. We care about you. You matter.”
We are deeply grateful to every tenant who took the time to give. Whether you donated one item or filled a whole box, your contribution is part of a much larger story. It’s a story of people coming together to make a difference.

As we head to Pretoria, we carry with us the warmth, gratitude, and inspiration from Frida Hartley. These experiences have a way of leaving a mark — shaping not just how we think, but how we act.
Our goal is to make giving back a defining part of our culture. Imagine what we could achieve if each of us looked for opportunities to lift others up in small but consistent ways. A few minutes of our time. A little extra effort. A willingness to listen. These are the things that turn generosity into a lifestyle.
